Maeng Eon Park, Ph.D.
President of Pukyong National University
Pukyong National University has been evaluated as the best university to innovate undergraduate educational systems
by unifying two local national universities successfully for the first time within Korea. Looking over the educational histories of these two universities from the moment of their foundation to that of their amalgamation into a new higher educational organization, it has been more than 80 years. Despite this long gap of time, all of our students are still trying hard to accomplish their dreams with passion just as their predecessors had done.
Almost all Korean universities have stepped into the educational structure of infinite competition aiming at offering globalized educational content of high quality, and at the same time national universities are facing hard times caused by the governmental policy of restructuring them into private corporations. However, we will surely get over these problems and move further on only if we try to change the current crisis into a new opportunity to expand our possibilities and reach our goals with creative and innovative mindsets.
Only those who have dreams for the future can make gains. Pukyong's new goal is to be a member of the top 100 global universities. We are also planning to support the development of promising new academic areas and help improve the levels of specialized research projects in at least three fields of studies to be among the top 10 in the global ranks. We will, furthermore, develop a more extensive global educational network. We will give our students numerous opportunities to discover and realize their potential as globally competent human resources. Under the support of student exchange programs, they will be able to learn new things from foreign research content and experience diverse exotic cultures in other countries. And at the same time we will continue to encourage highly qualified international students to come study here with us and try to develop a curriculum to meet their academic needs.
If we keep making efforts to get closer to our dreams with patience, we will surely be able to realize them someday in the near future. And once we reach these goals, we will have improved a lot more than now in every category of our educational system. By that time, we will have our own globalized educational infrastructure, specialized educational systems and programs, and well-organized research development facilities.
Multiplying our capabilities, achieving membership in the top 100 global universities; these goals themselves may seem hard to achieve. However, if we consider them our ultimate destinations and continue to move towards them, we will finally make our dreams come true. I hope all the people including our students and Busan citizens watch us with affection all the time.
