Established Research Center
  • Research Center for Ocean Industrial Development (RCOID)
The Research Center for Ocean Industrial Development (RCOID) was established on January 4, 1991, as part of the vitalization of university studies of KOSEF. It aims to develop basic/applied technology for the improvement of production of Korean coastal fishing grounds and farms, consistent industrial cooperation for the development of ocean space creational technology and the formation of an international cooperative research system. By presidential decree, it has been reorganized as the legal laboratory of a national university.
Step 1 of the Center was completed in 2000 with excellent results, as industrialization through improved productivity of coastal fishing grounds occurred. The development focus of research technology on fishery development was later changed to an independent research management system, expanding to step 2 from its base of step 1, and developing various forms of technology related to the usage development of ocean space. This focused on the expansion of its area of sustainable coastal space using the technology development, coastal oceanography, coastal and harbor engineering, and coastal ecological environment engineering and fishery engineering.
It also concentrates on nuturing intellectuals with knowledge of technology development and who possess masters and doctor's degrees from graduate school. It addition, the center is internationally recognized through its networks with research groups and databanks with domestic and overseas research organizations and research groups. Moreover, apart from its maritime specialization at PKNU, our institute has the further goal of undertaking core work by fostering the development of an ocean perspective technology industry and making Busan an ocean city base.
  • Environmental Research Center
It is a fact that environmental problems are increasing, and this is a very important issue facing modern society. It cannot be denied that the development of science technology brought innovative benefits and improvements to our lives; however, it also brought serious environmental problems to the natural environment, which is the basis of human life.
Currently, cars and public transportations release toxic gases, causing air pollution, wastewater in numerous factories, pollution of coasts and oceans, basically causing huge risks to human life and our vital fish resources. It is therefore essential that we find a way to improve this polluted environment and deeper research is required as researchers exchange their studies and more organized and structured basis. To meet these requirements, we offer basic studies of environmental problems by having built an environmental research center and providing professional knowledge and technology to government, public organizations and private companies to contribute to society.

It serves as a research organization performing the dual roles of monitor and manager of hazardous chemicals such as dioxins, and also producing scholars and scientific data on the preparation of management plans for legal maintenance. In addition, it has developed a method of public examination that constitutes policy information through practical researches of POPs such as PBDEs, PCNs, focusing on Dioxins: PCDD /DFs and PCBs.
According to the monitoring organization that announced its policy from January 1, 2009, the range of 'Dioxin measurement analysis organization' has expanded to 'Persistent Organic Pollutants measurement analysis' in order to widen its research area to Persistent Organic Pollutants among various environment material, including exhaustion gas and waste water. Due to Persistent Organic chemicals, in particular, dioxin effects bigger than the earth's environment, an international response and management are required for weather changes because of the planet's environmental problems. The nation is therefore undertaking partial work by providing scientific information from our government to international organizations such as UNEP and WHO.
It is one area of work that the Dioxin Research Center should take part in because of the international reaction, and, accordingly, the center functions as an organization that nurtures experts who can provide required expertise to monitor the protection of the population's health domestically. The Dioxin Research Center functions as part of our national university. In addition, this Center is the only one in existence at a national university, so it is used as an educational place of human resources through research, and it strives to provide consistent research development for its improvement.

  • Combat Desertification Research Center
Desertification is one of the symptoms of soil desolation that occurs in desert and semi-dry areas due to weather changes and human activities. According to UNCOD, around 60,000km of soil near dry areas around the globe is lost due to desertification.
The harm caused by desertification is indicated by production reduction from the soil, which leads to food shortages and economic difficulties. It also limits the growth of plants, reduces the number of plants and presents major obstacles to circulation function in ecology for plants. It also badly affects aerobic creatures by presenting a reduced amount of oxygen as well as an increased amount of carbon dioxide in the air due to the reduction of photosynthesized plants.
Yellow-dust phenomena can be an example of direct damage caused by environmental pollution arising from desertification. Korea is directly affected by yellow dust coming from China, the desert area of Mongolia and the yellow soil area of the Yellow River. This damage from yellow dust not only affects Korea but also Japan and the US, when it crosses the Pacific Ocean. It has been estimated by the US that the damage from yellow dust will increase when the desertification in China expands, so it is not an insignificant issue.
Currently, Korea is proceeding with policies related to desertification protection and the combatting of green forest and soil pollution; however, consistent interest and support will be more necessary in term of earth environment protection.
This Center plans to take the lead in combatting desertification within Korea and abroad with systematic research of recovery of ecology, determining its cause and preventing the acceleration of desertification that causes damage internationally due to global warming, weather change and artificial factors.
  • Desertification Prevention Institute
