PKNU receives attention as a candidate for the first 'Campus innovation park' in Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) is receiving public attention as a candidate for the first 'Campus innovation park' in Bu(san), Ul(san), and Gyeong(nam).

The campus innovation park project, jointly supervised by the Ministry of education, the Ministry of land, transport and maritime affairs, and the Ministry of SMEs and startups, is being promoted to create a high-tech industrial complex on the site of a university campus with easy accessibility.

Five universities, including Hanyang university, Kyungpook national university, and Chonnam national university, are currently selected as a project to create corporate space, start-up support facilities, housing, and cultural and welfare facilities on campus by investing several tens of billion won.

For this project, the Yongdang campus, which is a specialized campus for industrial-educational cooperation at Pukyong National University, has emerged as the ideal spot.

On May 24th, KBS news reported with the title ‘High-tech industrial complex on empty land of university… Busan's first review on the proposed site?', "The first ‘Campus innovation park’ in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam is highly likely to be built in Busan," and added, "It was decided to select two additional universities for the project, and Pukyong National University is included in the final six candidates."

The Yongdang campus of Pukyong National University has been managed as a mecca for industry-university cooperation, where all college departments moved to Daeyeon campus in 2019, and more than 260 companies including start-ups have moved in.

KBS news reported, "(If selected for the project) Competition is fierce with Changwon national university, the final candidate in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam for the first time," added, "If the campus is selected as the Campus innovation park, 19 billion won from the government and 50 billion won from the city government will be invested and will get supports from LH at the same time."

In an interview with Choi Hee-Rak, vice president for External affairs and development, "I want to build an infrastructure for industrial-educational cooperation throughout the campus and make it an opportunity for the community, companies, and universities to grow together."

If selected for the project, Pukyong National University plans to build a high-tech industrial complex in four professional fields, including marine, robot, and smart health, on a land of 20,000㎡ in the first stage, and expand it to the entire campus.

Especially, as national research institutes such as the Oceans and fisheries HRD institute branch and the Korea institute of robotics & technology convergence are also located in Yongdang campus, a synergistic effect is expected if it is selected as a campus innovation park.

The final selection for the Campus innovation park project will be released around June after going through on-site inspections and presentation by the evaluation group. <Pukyong Today>
