Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that Park Dae-Young (age 44, 2nd-year student) from the public safety and police science was recently selected as the recipient of the 8th Korean civil service award by the ministry of personnel and received the presentation order of 5th grade.

Mr. Park is a 'late bloomer’ student who entered Pukyong National University in 2021 and is an inspector working as a rescuer of the special rescue team under the Korea coast guard.

He was recognized as a public official who dedicated himself to the country and the people and made outstanding achievements through active work, and was finally selected as the recipient of the presentation order of 5th grade, the highest award among public official awards in Korea. He is the first official to receive a medal as a member of the Korea coast guard.

Park has been active as a veteran rescuer saving people's lives at the scene of a marine accident for 20 years since being appointed as a maritime police official in 2002. He was recognized for his outstanding achievements, such as the establishment of a cross-national cooperation system for underwater search and rescue by the private, public, and military sectors, the invention of special equipment for the initial stage source recovery of spilled oil from a wrecked ship, and the application for a patent.

He was unable to complete his studies due to difficult circumstances prior to his appointment, but recently entered Pukyong National University as a lifelong learner after 20 years, and has achieved such achievements while working and studying at the same time, drawing more attention from the public.

Park Dae-Young expressed his feeling, saying, “I received a great encouragement when I received an award while challenging my studies again with the thought that I could be more helpful in my lifeguard activities through my studies. Thanks to everyone who recognized my steady efforts.”

Professor Ham Hye-Hyun said, “Many students are working and studying at the same time, but Park Dae-Young is becoming an example to the people around him by focusing on his studies with outstanding tenacity and diligence.” <Pukyong Today>
