Pukyong National University’s Department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education Receives Top “A” Rating in the Ministry of Education’s 6th-Cycle Evaluation
- The nation’s only teacher-training program for fisheries and maritime education; results of the Ministry of Education’s 6th-cycle competency evaluation
- Practice-oriented curriculum recognized, including advanced major training and maritime officer license acquisition

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education at Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-Hoon) has earned the top “A” rating in the 6th-Cycle Evaluation of Teacher Education Institutions conducted by the Ministry of Education, reaffirming its status as Korea’s only teacher-training institution specializing in fisheries and maritime education.
Since its establishment in 1963, the department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education at Pukyong National University has produced outstanding teachers and maritime officers for more than half a century, serving as a cornerstone of fisheries and maritime education in Korea.
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education consistently received strong ratings in previous evaluations. However, in the 5th-cycle evaluation, it recorded a disappointing result due to the specialized nature of its rare subject area and a decline in teacher recruitment demand. In the 6th-cycle evaluation, the department successfully regained its former standing after faculty and staff comprehensively reorganized the curriculum and pursued extensive educational innovation.
In this latest evaluation, the department earned the top rating for its professional expertise and practice-oriented education tailored to field demands. In particular, the program operates six specialized tracks―△Engineering △Navigation △Fisheries △Aquaculture △Refrigeration △Food Processing―and offers not only theoretical instruction but also a practice-oriented curriculum, including preparation for obtaining the ‘Third-Class Maritime Officer’ License. This approach was highly evaluated for producing graduates who can immediately contribute in educational and professional settings after graduation.
The faculty of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education stated, “This evaluation result officially recognizes the department’s unique expertise and the high quality of its education.” They added, “We will continue to cultivate creative teachers who will lead the future of Korea as a maritime power, responding to rapidly changing industrial environments such as smart aquaculture, advanced navigation technologies, and the development of Arctic shipping routes.”
Based on the outcome of this evaluation, Pukyong National University’s Department of Fisheries and Marine Industry Education plans to further strengthen its role as a national education hub in the marine and fisheries sectors, which are key strategic industries of the country. <Pukyong Today>
