“We do not envy someone who is studying abroad because of the programs offered at PKNU.” The closing ceremony of the 2011 Pukyong Cultural Exchange Program was held in the lecture room on the fourth floor of the Hyangpa Building in PKNU on July 22nd. A total of 98 PKNU students, including 84 students who took part in 6 separate English classes and 14 students who took a Japanese language class, participated in this program which was run by the Foreign Language Center. The Director of the Foreign Language Center is Park Sun Hyeok. This program was created in order to help the students improve their foreign language conversation ability. The students stayed at the Sejong Gwan dormitory on Daeyeon campus for 4 weeks, starting from June 27th. They had to participate in intensive English or Japanese conversation classes for 7 hours a day. The students also had to take part in extracurricular activities with native English speaking instructors or native Japanese speaking instructors. The students who took part in this program will receive 3 credits for this summer session because they officially completed either the intensive English conversation class or the intensive Japanese conversation class. In addition, the most talented students among all of the participants were awarded a Certificate of Merit and a prize from the President of PKNU. One of the participants, Jang Yu Ri, a junior student of the Department of Law stated, “Even though I have never gone abroad for language studies, I gained a lot of confidence to speak a foreign language by taking part in this program. I had to use English only to talk to native English speaking instructors for about one month.” The Foreign Language Center has run these 4 week intensive foreign language conversation classes every summer and winter since 1997 in order to help PKNU students improve their foreign language conversation ability. <Pukyong Today> |
