The first establishment of the LED department is the combined Masters and Doctorate courses
- The LED engineering cooperative curriculum in graduate school has been set up. The application period will be from May 7th~11th.

It is meaningful for PKNU to set up a combined Master’s and Doctorate course in the LED sector.
PKNU has established ‘a Cooperative LED Course’ in graduate school and it will begin in September 2012.
The ‘Cooperative LED Course’ is a program that has been designed to train top-level human resources, especially skilled engineers in LED. The 2-year and 3- year curriculum in the Master and Doctorate degree are composed respectively. The combined degree will offer 30 subjects in 8 sectors containing lighting, convergence, material and parts, and patent will serve as a pivotal role in nurturing specialists in the LED sector.
In order for this to be achieved, PKNU has hired 20 faculty members majoring in this sector and built a partnership with 31 companies including Samsung LED and LG Innotec CO Ltd, for internships and employment support.
In particular, PKNU will support  students’ participation in R&D and the provision of high-tech equipment through the LED-Maritime Convergence Technology R&D Center. Young Moon, Yoo is the head of the center which opened in 2010 for the first time in Korea. With that support, an enabling environment will be arranged for cultivating specialists in the LED –Marine Convergence Industry focusing on prominent areas such as aquiculture, navigation safety and ocean lighting. In addition, some support funds will be given to students for their research activities.
Hee-Rak, Choi, a head professor said, “the demand for professionals in this sector has gradually been on the rise but there hasn’t been official courses in this sector”. He also stated, “we will make a full-fledged effort to educate professionals in the LED Industry as well as in the LED Marine Convergence Industry”.
