"Philippines veterans, thank you!" February 26, the 5th Pukyong UN Supporters made of 25 students of the university visited the Korean War veterans memorial in Taguig city of Manila, Philippine. They had a meeting with the veterans and carried out memorial ceremony for the fallen soldiers. The memorial built in 2012 supported its site (5,000㎡) from Philippine government for free and its construction cost around 1.2 billion won from Korean government. It is running the exhibit hall honored for the veterans great sacrifices and library. Philippine sent their 7500 soldiers which is the 6th most number among 21 countries in UN forces where supported Korea in the war, and 120 of them died. They even stayed until May, 1955 after ceasefire to safe our peace. The supporters gave thank-you letters and presents to the 7 Philippines veterans, and they also visited the memorial to lay flowers on the fallen soldiers tombs to respect their sacrifice. On this day, one of the veterans, Sixbo Belen (89 years old), said that it is very touching that Korean young people visited us without forgetting us. "I could learn about the sacrifice of veterans in Korean war as I work as the UN supporters. I won't forget that their sacrifice made our life safe and stable," Koo Young-Mo (junior of department of electronics engineering) who is one of the supporters said. The supporters also conducted various international exchange activities with students from Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City of Manila until February 9. Meanwhile, Pukyong UN Supporters is conducting various activities for peace such as supporting events in UN Memorial Cemetery, volunteer job in veterans hospital and volunteer job in the countries where participated Korean War since it has been started in 2009 as one of the programs of eco-versity education empowerment business.<Pukyong Today> |
