Professor Lee Sang Go is elected vice president of FAO Committee on Fisheries

Professor Lee Sang Go (department of Marine Business and Economics of PKNU) was elected vice-president of FAO(Food and Agriculture Organization) Committee on Fisheries under the United Nations. FAO Committee on Fisheries is the highest decision-making body of the fisheries sector in the world.
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on 15th that the Professor Lee was elected vice-president by a unanimous vote of 118 attending member nations based on support by Asian countries at the meeting of the 31st held at the FAO headquarter in Rome, Italy from last 13th to 9th.
FAO Committee on Fisheries is a sub committee of FAO where member countries of 138 cooperate to lead the flow of world fisheries policy. Serving as vice president of FAO Committee of Fisheries of a Korean is the first time in 35 years and the third, following 1977 and 1979.
Professor Lee will lead the committee, assisting the Brazilian president with other vice presidents from each of 5 different regions for the next two years until June 2016, on behalf of the Asia.
Professor Lee has participated in various meetings and forums of fisheries field of international organizations such as FAO, WTO (World Trade Organization), OECD(Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) as a governmental representative. He also served as vice-president of the OECD Committee on Fisheries in 2008.
With the election of Professor Lee as vice-president, domestic establishment of "FAO World Fisheries University" that Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is promoting along with the FAO is also expected to gain momentum. World Fisheries university serves to provide educations and training for economic independence, capacity building and poverty eradication of developing countries.
The professor said, "I will do my best to enhance the status of Korea and want to be a strong bridge in the FAO Committee connecting and cooperating closely with each country in the world to establish World Fisheries University in my country.“ <Pukyong today>
