Professor Kim Se-kwon Selected for the Top Scientist Again
- Clarivate Analytics says one of the “most influential scientific minds”

Kim Se-kwon (68), who is an honorary professor at Pukyong National University, was named among the world’s greatest scientists three years in a row.

According to the announcement of PKNU on December 21, Professor Kim is the only researcher from Busan region among 26 Korean scientists who were selected as the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters.

They belong to a group of 3,000 researchers worldwide, whose science and social science papers, written in the period of eleven years from January 2004, have ranked in the top one percent by citation counts. The citation count is the frequency with which their reports are read and footnoted, or cited, by other scientists.  

Professor Kim, also a research consultant of the Kolmar Korea, has written 650 papers on investigation and development of bioactive substances from marine organisms, and 460 of them are indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). He is author of 125 patents and 60 books including 36 international publications.

For his dedication to the research and industrialization of marine biotechnology, he received the Order of Science and Technology Merit from the Korean government, the Best Paper Award from the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS), the Academic Award from the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Science (KOSFAS), the Industry-University Cooperation Award, the 40th Culture Award of Busan, the Mokun Life Science Award from the Korean Academy of Science Technology (KAST), and the National Academy of Science Award. He served as the first president of the Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan and the Korean Society for Marine Technology.

He is the director of the International Marine Biotechnology Association (IMBA) and the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods (ISNFF) as well as the editor of international scientific journals, Marine Biotechnology  and Journal of Functional Foods.  <Pukyong Today>
