Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, "Pukyong National University, Outstanding results for Marine fisheries and healthcare convergence research"
The 4th Marine Fisheries Science and Technology Award, Grand Prize for Professor Oh Jeong-hwan, Excellence Prize for Professor Jeong won-kyo

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries gave a thumbs-up in the achievement of Pukyong National University ’s research on marine fisheries and health care convergence.

Professor Oh Jeong-hwan of Pukyong National University was selected as the winner of the 4th Marine Fisheries Science Technology grand prize by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for his contribution to marine fisheries development.

In addition, professors Jeong Won-kyo of the same department is awarded the Excellence Prize in the academic research division of this subject.

They will receive awards at the 4th Marine Fisheries Science Technology Awards ceremony at the opening ceremony of the marine fisheries technology commercialization festival held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on July 12.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said, "Professor Oh has proven that it can be used for the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases such as cancer by developing ultra-precision medical devices for diagnosis and treatment of human body using functional materials of marine life. "He is honored to be recognized for innovation and excellence in the fusion of his products."

Professor Oh’s accomplishment is ’development of medical devices for diagnosis and treatment of cancer using marine-derived materials.’

According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Professor Oh is producing nanocomposites using biologically applicable marine-derived materials (prorotinin, astaxanthin, chitosan, etc.) and doing research on the development of biological materials and medical devices using this.

He produced a biocompatible chitosan-polypyrrole nanocomposite (CS-PPy-NCs) using marine-derived chitosan and developed various bio-application fields using the maximum absorption wavelength of the material.

In particular, he has developed a NIR laser that responds to marine biological materials and proved that it can be used for the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases through absorption and scattering process.

Over the past three years, Professor Oh has written 54 papers related to this, and has accomplished 16 patents, 3 technology transfers, and he founded O’Labs Inc.

The professor Jeong Won-kyo who won the excellent prize was awarded the achievement of contributing to the commercialization technology of high-tech materials originating from marine life and marine life resources through the research result of medical new material development that can rapidly restore bone tissue using seaweed.

Professor Jeong has costal bioactive materials that can rapidly restore skin and bone tissue, and has identified physicochemical properties and pharmacopoeia.

Professor Jeong has accomplished with 25 papers, 23 patents, and 3 technology transfers over the past three years.

Professor Oh and Professor Jeong are the researchers who lead the commercialization technology development project of ’marine fusion compound biotechnology’ which is a marine fisheries biotechnology development project with a total investment of 31.8 billion. This is a leading group in Korea for research on the development of fusion biomedical diagnosis and treatment technology based on marine bionics materials.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is rewarding ’Maritime Fisheries Science and Technology Award’ by selecting those who contributed to the development of marine fisheries industry and the income of marine fishermen by creating outstanding achievements through research and development of marine fisheries. Since 2015, they have selected 7 laureates each year, encouraging researchers and research institutions to be proud of their achievements and to be more committed to research. <Pukyong Today>
