Professor Ryu Jang-soo was elected as 9th president of the KRIVET Korea research Institute for Vocational Education & Training

Professor Ryu Jang-soo (Department of Economics) of Pukyong National University was elected as the 9th president of the Korea research Institute for Vocational Education & Training (KRIVET).

The National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC) under the Prime Minister announced that it held a board meeting on the 28th and decided to appoint Professor Ryu as the new president.

His term of office is three years until December 2023.

Korea research Institute for Vocational Education & Training (KRIVET) is a national research institute under the Prime Minister.

It was established in 1997 with the aim of contributing to the vitalization of vocational education and training and improvement of vocational skills through research projects on vocational competency development, such as research on vocational education and training policies and qualification systems, and development and distribution of vocational education and training programs.

The new president, Professor Ryu, graduated from Kyungpook National University, Department of Economics, and received master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from Seoul National University. He has been working as a professor since 1995 at the Department of Economics at Pukyong National University.

He is an employment who has served as a public interest member of the National Labor Relations Commission, a chairman of the Development Committee of Local universities and Junior colleges of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and who served as the chief of Planning Division, a chairperson of the University Structural Reform Committee, as well as the 11th Committee president of the Minimum Wage at Busan Regional Human Resources Development Committee (Busan HRD) , and a member of Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development Committee (NABIS).

New president Mr. Ryu said in an interview titled ’Era of Lifelong Education… Development of a program that will increase job competency’ which was published in the Korean Economic Daily on 30, December, "In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the concept and framework of jobs and education will all change. Therefore, a major educational reform is needed that links school education and vocational education."

The newspaper evaluated Mr. Ryu, the new president, "He is regarded as one of the best experts in this field, who has been in charge of policy advice and development in the fields of economy, labor, and education for each successive government."

In this article, Mr. Ryu, the new president said, "It is urgent to envision an educational paradigm in which general universities focusing on research and theory, vocational education-centered vocational colleges, and vocational training institutions that can provide lifelong education are interconnected."
