Nutra-it, a company founded by PKNU faculty selected as ‘TIPS’ by the Ministry of SMEs and startups
- founding start-up company by prof. Cho Seung-Mok adds momentum to the globalization of functional foods that helps in sleep-improvment
Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that Nutra-it, a venture company founded by professor Cho Seung-Mok (major of food science & technology in the division of food science), was finally selected for the program ‘Tech incubator program for start-up (TIPS)’ managed by the Ministry of SMEs and startups.
TIPS is a project that supports technology start-ups led by private enterprise, where the government and private investors jointly discover and support startups with technology that can lead the global market.
As Nutra-it participates in the TIPS program through investment and recommendation from the center for creative economy and innovation in Chungbuk, the company will receive R&D funding of 5 billion won for the next two years in recognition of its technological prowess and promising.
Founded last year, Nutra-it is a company specializing in research and development of functional health foods such as functional materials for improving sleep.
Professor Cho Seung-Mok, the CEO of the company, is a health functional food expert and has succeeded in developing a functional food that improves sleep derived from seaweed (Ecklonia cava) for the first time in Korea, and has been individually recognized by the Ministry of food and drug safety. Subsequently, rice bran extract was also recognized as a sleep-improving functional food.
Nutra-it was selected for the K-startup support project within three months of its founding in recognition of the outstanding technology of its CEO, and this year, it also achieved an investment of 200 million won.
In particular, as professor Cho succeeded in developing low-dose, high-efficiency materials (N1 and N2) with sleep-improving functions and completed patent applications and trademark applications, the company recorded 1 billion in sales within 1 year and 6 months of founding and is growing stably, as the company selected for ‘TIPS’ the company gained momentum in strengthening research capabilities and globalization.
Cho Seung-Mok, CEO of Nutra-it said, “So far, we have been working hard to create a new market through the development of functional food for sleep improvement for the first time in Korea and to gain authorization from the Ministry of food and drug safety. We will not be satisfied with this, but will do our best to make new functional materials recognized as world-class sleep-improving functional foods.”
Director Oh Jeong-Hwan from the Pukyong National University's industry-university cooperation foundation, said, “Nutra-it, which was founded based on the food science division in Pukyong National University, the first food-related department in Korea, was selected as 'TIPS', and I am very proud of it as an example of excellent industry-university cooperation.
