Pukyong National University and Dongseo university establish ‘Dept. of digital finance’ that grants a joint degree

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) and Dongseo university (president Chang Je-Kuk) are promoting the establishment of the Department of Digital Finance, a high-tech department that can award degrees from both universities.

Pukyong National University and Dongseo university requested approval from the Ministry of education on February 3 to jointly establish a digital finance department, to nurture professionals in the high-tech digital finance field.

Following the industry-university cooperation agreement with the Korea exchange last year, both universities recently signed a detailed agreement for the joint establishment of the Department of digital finance. Accordingly, both university plans to select 20 new students from each university to enter the Department of digital finance from the 2024 school year. Students who graduate from this department can receive a joint degree from both universities.

The educational purpose of this department is to nurture ‘QUANT (quantitative analyst)’ fintech experts who will lead the future financial industry. Based on the efforts for 'innovation of Busan', which is taking off as a digital financial center, it has established a leading model for fostering new technology professionals.

They plan to jointly organize and operate education courses on finance and financial theory, mathematics and statistical theory, data science and programming, blockchain, big data and ICT financial technology, internships and field training.

Subjects according to the joint curriculum are divided and opened at each university. Students will go back and forth between the two universities to take lectures and earn credits for them. As for the faculty, it is planned that at least 4 full-time professors will be assigned to each university, with a total of 8 or more.

To operate the new joint department, Pukyong National University plans to establish an infrastructure for training digital innovation talents such as the ‘digital new technology experts training course’ and ‘SW professional training project’ and Dongseo university plans to strategically deploy infrastructure for convergence and related majors such as AI, big data, and the internet of things, as well as a combined master's and doctorate program.

Both universities expect to achieve a synergistic effect in collaborating with Busan city and the Korea exchange to lead future industries by establishing a regional and field-oriented learning operating system and fostering global talent active in the world. <Pukyong Today>
