Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced on April 18 that the university was finally selected for the ‘Campus innovation park project 2023’ to create an urban high-tech industrial complex on the campus.
The Campus innovation park is a large-scale project jointly promoted by the Ministry of education, the Ministry of land, infrastructure and transport, and the Ministry of SMEs and startups to build a university-centered regional innovation ecosystem. The input budget is 53 billion won for 5 years, including government and city expenses.
This project is promoted to develop the university into a regional innovation growth base by creating an urban high-tech industrial complex on an idle site on the university campus and preparing an innovation hub (for corporate tenant) for industry, academia, and research institutes.
With this goal, universities in Busan as well as all over the country competed fiercely, and two universities, Pukyong National University and Dankook university (Cheonan campus), were finally selected.
Based on the fact that Yongdang campus has an excellent location for transportation and logistics, possessing about 250 tenant companies including start-ups, in close cooperation with the industry and Busan city, and is attracting attention as a mecca for industry-university-research cooperation in the southeastern region, it served as the biggest strength for business promotion.
As selected for this project, a site of 18,000㎡ within the Yongdang campus was designated as an urban high-tech industrial complex, and an innovation hub, Pukyong National University is planning to build a innovation hub with a total floor area of 20,000㎡ equipped with cultural and welfare facilities as well as industrial-academic cooperation space for companies to move in by 2028.
Pukyong National University plans to increase the connection between Busan City and the local government-industry-university-research program, and maximize achievements such as fostering local talent and entrepreneurship education. The city of Busan decided to actively provide continuous administrative and financial support, such as providing construction costs, support for resident companies fostering programs, financial support for resident companies, and labor cost support for new employees. Accordingly, Pukyong National University Yongdang campus is expected to emerge as the largest industry-university-research cooperation cluster in Korea with a total of 500 companies and 5,000 research and technical personnel by 2028.
It is also expected to gain momentum in the selection and promotion such as government projects and future industry-related projects hosted by Busan city, such as ‘regional semiconductor joint research institute', 'semiconductor specialized university support project', and ‘startup educational university', which Pukyong National University is promoting internally.
President Jang Young-Soo said, “Through this project, I expect that it will serve as an important opportunity for Pukyong National University and the local community to grow together by creating jobs in the future industry, fostering excellent local talent, and resolving job mismatching between companies and talent.” <Pukyong Today>
