After Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) started operation on a large scale, the 'reformed class' is drawing attention as it is seeing the effect of the lecture.

Pukyong National University announced on June 22 that Professor Park Joon-Hyung and the student team of Jeong Eun-Seo, Kim Ye-Seo, and Hwang Do-Eun from the department of English language and literature received the best paper award at the 2023 student workshop of the American studies association of Korea recently held at Kyunghee university.

At this workshop, the Pukyong National University team made a presentation based on the course and results of the lecture titled 'introduction to American studies', which was conducted as PBL (problem-based learning/project-based learning), a reformed class last semester, and received an excellent evaluation.

Reformed classes are taught by two or more professors or in a way that continues on-site discussion after online learning and refers to lectures that deviate from the traditional method.

Previously, professors used to apply reformed classes method individually, but Pukyong National University officially enacted the reformed class operation guideline in 2020 to provide systematic support.

Pukyong National University classified reformed classes into eight types: problem-based learning, project-based learning, team-based learning, flipped learning, blended learning, team teaching, co-teaching, maker education, and action learning. For professors, special lectures on teaching methods are provided, and for students, support is provided to guide the class from the course registration stage.

Since 2020, Pukyong National University has opened about 1,500 reformed classes every year, and the response from students is high, so the number of participating lecturers is increasing every semester.

The team from Pukyong National University, which was recognized and awarded by the American studies association of Korea, also conducted a project by team on an issue related to American studies rather than focusing on theoretical lectures in the 'introduction to American studies' lecture, held weekly presentations and discussions, and made full use of the self-directed experience of solving problems.

Park Jong-Yong, director of the center for educational innovation and achievement at Pukyong National University, said, "For the quality of lectures and the competence of students, we plan to further expand the operation of reformed classes, such as systematic support for teachers according to their proficiency in reformed classes." <Pukyong Today>
