Pukyong National University Selected to Lead the 2025 Digital Sprout Project
- Customized Digital Talent Training in Gyeongsang Region to Begin in Earnest
Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-hoon) announced that it has been selected as the lead organization for the 2025 Digital Sprout Project in the Gyeongsang region, in partnership with the Korea Maker Education Cooperative (CEO Yoon Soo-kyung).
Organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC), the project is a national educational initiative aimed at elementary, middle, and high school students. It provides hands-on experiences in software and artificial intelligence and helps foster digital literacy. The program seeks to bridge the digital education gap based on regional conditions and nurture future talents who can understand and apply digital technologies in a responsible and informed manner.
The project will run from May through the end of December 2025, with a total budget of 1.2 billion KRW. The Digital Sprout programs will be offered free of charge to elementary, middle, and high school students across the region. Activities will take place both at Pukyong National University’s Daeyeon Campus Changui Hall and through on-site visits to local schools.
With this selection, Pukyong National University plans to provide programs for more than 4,500 students, including △Building AI Robots for Fishing Villages △SOS! Save the Ocean! △Designing Marine AI Devices △AR Storytelling Journeys to the Sea with AI △Developing Chatbots to Promote Local Marine Culture, and △Becoming a Digital Artist.
Through this initiative, Pukyong National University aims to deliver hands-on, advanced digital education tailored to the unique characteristics of coastal regions in Gyeongsang, Honam, and Jeju―areas often underserved in digital access. The university also plans to foster practical, future-ready talent connected to emerging industries, enhance integration with regular school curricula, and ultimately contribute to the advancement of the regional digital education ecosystem.
Professor Noh Maeng-seok (Department of Big Data Convergence), who is leading the project, stated, “Through this initiative, we aim to reduce the digital education gap and strengthen students’ digital competencies by aligning programs with school curricula. Our goal is to expand a nationwide foundation for AI, AR, and VR-based education rooted in the marine and fisheries sectors, and to cultivate top-tier talent that will lead the future of regional industries.” <Pukyong Today>
