Pukyong National University Holds Launch Ceremony for PKNU Student Volunteer Corps

80 Members Selected Through Competitive Screening After Strong Response from Applicants

Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-hoon) held the 2025 inauguration ceremony for the PKNU Student Volunteer Corps on May 23 in the main conference hall on the second floor of the university headquarters.

At the ceremony, 80 students who were selected as this year’s volunteers took an oath to serve faithfully and officially began their activities.

Throughout the year, they will participate in a wide range of volunteer activities on campus, in the local community, across the country, and abroadfocusing on areas such as social contribution, UN peace and veteran’s affairs, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Volunteer Corps plans to begin this year’s activities with a community mural painting project at the end of May. This will be followed by a variety of service initiatives, including home repair support for disadvantaged neighbors, a memorial event for Korean War veterans, the PKNU Guardians of Hope program for at-risk and underprivileged youth, study room support for local children, educational support for North Korean defector youth, kimchi-sharing campaigns, used clothing recycling drives, and special domestic and overseas volunteer missions during academic breaks.

Building on last year’s effortswhich included 28 group volunteer projects and 52 team-based activitiesthe Corps plans to further expand its tailored volunteer programs. In particular, this year we will see new collaborations with the Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC) to operate local study rooms as part of an educational outreach effort, along with continued partnerships with local governments, regional organizations, welfare foundations, and volunteer centers.

Originally, the university planned to recruit 70 student volunteers this year. However, due to overwhelming interest with over 120 applicants, the quota was increased by 10, and a final group of 80 students was selected through a screening process. Among the many student programs offered at PKNU, the Volunteer Corps has gained popularity for providing diverse experiences and opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Kim Cheol-su, Dean of Student Affairs, stated, “I hope our students grow into inspiring young leaders who value sharing and communication, through experiences that allow them to contribute to their communities and engage with society.” <Pukyong Today>
