Pukyong National University, Selected for APCEIU Global Citizenship Education Course Program
- Opening and Operating the ‘Global Issues and World Citizens’ Course
Pukyong National University (Acting President Lee Min-hee) announced on October 28 that the Department of International Area Studies has been selected for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) ‘2025 Global Citizenship Education Course Program.’
APCEIU, established in 2000 through an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Korea and UNESCO, is aligned with ‘UNESCO Education 2030’ and the ‘UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ and works to promote international understanding education and global citizenship education.
The Global Citizenship Education Course Program aims to establish a cross-curricular foundation for the widespread adoption of global citizenship education, encourage institutionalization and regularization of global citizenship education in higher education, and support the enhancement of understanding and awareness of global citizenship education among domestic university students.
Pukyong National University’s Department of International Area Studies, following this project selection, will offer the course ‘Global Issues and World Citizens’ to undergraduate students in the upcoming spring semester(with the project directors, Professors Jeong Beom-mo and Moon Ki-hong from the Department of International Area Studies).
This course is a balanced general education class for students at Pukyong National University. Its aim is to understand the background of why awareness as a global citizen has become important and to foster a sense of responsibility as a citizen by critically reflecting on international issues. Topics such as multiculturalism, global citizenship education, international development cooperation, economic justice, and global civil society are designed to provide deeper knowledge and perspectives through expert guest speakers.
The Department of International Area Studies has set the goal of training regional experts with systematic knowledge and practical skills about major global regions, in response to the trends of globalization and internationalization. To achieve this, the department plans to provide interdisciplinary research and education on major global regions and key issues, enabling students to acquire a broad understanding of international issues and problem-solving skills, while also preparing them to become experts on specific regions and issues.
Professor Jeong Beom-mo (Department of International Area Studies, Major in International Development Cooperation), who will be in charge of the course, stated, “Being selected as one of the 10 universities nationwide for this project, I expect that we will be able to enhance the quality of the course by inviting external experts for guest lectures in the related subjects already offered, and strengthen activities to spread the content and outcomes of the education.” <Pukyong Today>
