The chairperson of the Indonesian National Assembly received an honorary doctorate from PKNU, the ‘hub-university of Korean-Indonesian universities’

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) awarded an honorary doctorate in political science to Ms. Puan Maharani (age 49), the chairperson of the National Assembly of Indonesia, at the university theater located on Daeyeon Campus on the morning of November 7th.

 

The event was held with a total of 140 people in attendance, including Ms. Puan Maharani, the chairperson of the national assembly, Ms. Megawati Sukarnoputri, the former Indonesian president, 7 minister-caliber members including the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, 41 members of the national assembly, and 8 university presidents from Indonesia.

 

Ms. Maharani, the chairperson of the national assembly, received this degree in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the development of Indonesia today and the advancement of women's rights as an outstanding political leader.

 

She is a prestigious political leader elected as the first female chairperson of the people's representative council (DPR) in Indonesia's history. She is also the youngest minister in Indonesia.

 

As a member of the ruling Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), she was elected to the national assembly with the most votes in the 2019 general election.

 

President Jang Young-Soo said, “I would like to warmly congratulate Ms. Maharani, who obtained an honorary doctorate in political science today and became a proud alumnus of Pukyong National University,” he added, “I expect that this meaningful event will serve as an opportunity to foster exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Indonesia to a new level.”

 

He also said, “I ask for unstinted support for Pukyong National University to play an active role as a university centered on the development of higher education and fostering global leaders in Southeast Asia, along with its role as a hub for exchange and cooperation between universities in Korea and Indonesia in the future.”

 

Ms. Maharani mentioned, “I am very proud and honored to receive an honorary doctorate from one of the best universities, Pukyong National University. Also, I am happy to become an alumnus of Pukyong National University, and I hope that this event will serve as an opportunity to deepen friendship between the two countries in all fields as well as education.”

 

President Jang Young-Soo of Pukyong National University signed an academic exchange agreement with the presidents of eight Indonesian universities, including the University of Pattimura, who visited Korea with Ms. Maharani at the Dongwon Jang Bogo building in the afternoon following the honorary doctorate conferment ceremony. In addition, he decided that Pukyong National University will serve as a university hub between Korean and Indonesian universities and expand friendly and cooperative relations in the fields of academic, cultural, and human resources.

 

Following the schedule of signing the academic exchange agreement, President Jang Young-Soo and Ms. Maharani moved to Yongho bay and conducted a field trip to Baek-Kyung which is one of Pukyong National University’s high-tech training ships. <Pukyong Today>
