Organizations representing domestic and international aquaculture have joined hands to promote and develop Korean sustainable future aquaculture technology.
Pukyong National University college of fisheries science, ASC (Aquaculture stewardship council), the Korea research association of sustainable aquaculture improvements, and Aquapro trading held a multilateral agreement ceremony for 'promoting sustainable aquaculture technology' in the conference room at Pukyong National University college of fisheries science building on December 27.
The agreement arranged to disseminate sustainable aquaculture technology for the future of the domestic aquaculture industry, collaborate to improve the quality and expand the market for responsible cultured fishery products for the environment and society, and promote accreditation from the Aquaculture stewardship council.
Pukyong National University, Korea's leading national university specializing in fisheries and marine sciences, with the ASC, an international aquaculture certification organization headquartered in the UK and the Netherlands, is an international organization working to expand the market for sustainable seafood, Korea research association of sustainable aquaculture improvements, a technology network for transitioning aquaculture to smart farms and digital technologies, and Aquapro trading, the first company in Korea to successfully cultivate flounder using a circular filtration method have expanded cooperation through this agreement.
Recently, as sustainable fishery production that fulfills environmental and social responsibilities has spread globally, the use of technologies that track history, use high-efficiency fish meal mixed feed, use recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) methods, or limit the use of drugs and antibiotics has increased, ASC certification has been expanded for salmon farming in Europe and high value-added fish farming in Japan, the organizations signed an agreement to expand cooperation.
Specific areas of cooperation include education and promotion of producers, market access and expansion cooperation for ASC-certified farmed fishery products, promoting the need for sustainable fishery products to consumers, spreading consumption culture, and cooperation on joint promotions, expansion of environmentally friendly mixed feed, development of smart aquaculture technology, and information sharing.
Prior to the agreement ceremony on this day, a meeting was also held to announce major agendas related to sustainable aquaculture, and discussions were carried on the excessive resource consumption currently faced by the aquaculture industry, as well as the development of improvement plans for existing practices that do not take into account safety, environment, and social responsibility, attended by officials from the agreement organizations, the National institute of fisheries science, and the Jeju maritime institute. <Pukyong Today>
