Pukyong National University Expands Its Rigorous Major Program Accreditation System, “Getting the Basics Right”
- Twelve additional departments and majors newly accredited, strengthening the quality assurance framework for major education

Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-Hoon) has granted four-year accreditation to 12 departments and majors through its Major Program Accreditation System, which is operated to systematically manage the quality of major education and ensure the continuous improvement of curricula.
At the 2025 Major Program Accreditation Awards and Plaque Presentation Ceremony, held on February 6 in the second-floor conference room of the university’s main administration building, a total of 12 departments and majors received accreditation: Korean Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Economics, Law, Fashion Design, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Management Engineering, Technology and Data Engineering, Applied Life Science in Aquaculture, and Resource and Environmental Economics.
The Major Program Accreditation System is designed to comprehensively review and accredit the entire process of each departments and major’s curriculum―the very foundation of students’ disciplinary competencies―from the establishment of educational objectives and curriculum design to implementation and support, as well as evaluation and continuous improvement. Its goal is to strengthen the alignment between the university’s educational objectives and major curricula, and to systematically ensure the quality of major education.
Accreditation is finalized through a multi-step process that includes a review based on each departments and major’s self-evaluation report, document-based evaluation and consulting by an accreditation review panel, and final deliberation by the Educational Innovation Committee. Following a pilot phase in the 2023 academic year, in which four departments and majors were accredited, an additional 11 were accredited in 2024, and 12 more have now completed the process in the 2025 academic year.
Departments and majors that obtain this accreditation will be subject to ongoing monitoring of their curriculum operations throughout the validity period, ensuring that the quality of education is continuously maintained and managed. During the accreditation period, graduates of the accredited departments will have a ‘Major Program Accreditation’ mark displayed on their graduation certificates, providing students and educational stakeholders with added confidence in the quality and credibility of the major education.
Looking ahead, Pukyong National University plans to gradually make participation in the Major Program Accreditation System mandatory, encouraging more departments to take part. By expanding the system each year with a target proportion of participating departments, the university aims to establish a sustainable feedback and improvement framework that continuously enhances the quality of major education. <Pukyong Today>
