Students of professor Cho Sang-myung get royalty from their invention

Students of PKNU will get 50% of stake from the invention of the laboratory
- The technology invented together transferred ... they will get 0.5~7% of royalty for next ten years depends on their contribution about the research

The professor of Pukyong National University gave a big part of invention right of patent technology transferred it to a corporation.

Cho Sang-myung, the professor of new material system engineering, made a contract with Jonghap Machinery (director Kim Ji-Hong, Yusan-dong, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do) which is the corporation of welding automation machines about 'Filler Metal Forming Delivery Device for TIG Welding' in the meeting room of industry-university cooperation team placed on 5th floor of Hamir building of Yongdang campus in the morning of April 15.

However, professor Cho decided to get just 50% of the stake of the inventor stake. The rest of the stake will be given to his 15 students. Commonly, the leading professors in university laboratory get 80~95% of inventor stakes from the whole right.

The stakes of students are from 0.5~7% depends on their contribution about the research. The most contributed students are Jeon Jae-ho (29 years old), Byun Jae-gyu (24 years old) in doctor's degree will have 7% for each, and Kim Young-hoon (24 years old) and Lee Sang-jun (23 years old) in bachelor's degree will have 0.5% for each.

They got the deposit from transferring the technology to the corporation. In addition, they will get 30% of royalty in the case of module sales, 3% of it in the case of system sales, and 1% of it for next ten years.

“I gave it to them as I want to give benefits to all of my students who are working so hard to develop the technology. I hope that this is going to be helpful to make active atmosphere of the laboratory," the professor said.

Professor Cho also transferred the technology to the corporation G.E.C (CEO Yoon Seok-phil) last month. This device patent is for welding with new C-type strip welding rod which hasn't been existed before.

His laboratory is called as 'frontline of creative economy’.
The procedure of the laboratory is quite impressive: graduate student's voluntary participation for the research → development of future welding technology → inspiration of corporative innovation → improvement of the value of corporation → development of the industry.

'We can move the world when we gather our wisdom'. This is common and favorite sentence of professor Cho who is the core of this patent invention. He makes graduate students in his laboratory make voluntary small groups. Then, he gathers the groups and manages them to make them as the cluster of patent. As the patents, results of the system, have been transferred to companies continually, the laboratory is giving the driving force of the innovation of the corporation. He strongly said that his laboratory is 'the frontline of creative economy what is recently emphasized by government'.

The technology dramatically improves productivity of TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding which had been pointed as the critical disadvantage of it even though it is known as the clean welding. It is about the shape of welding rod and device what can improve the productivity more than as three times (6.3kg/hr). In addition, it uses less than one-third of energy compared to the way before, and it can do welding without making any spark and CO2 gas. It means that it is environment-friendly welding and it is being evaluated as the proper technology of future manufacturing companies.

Furthermore, it has large utility value as it can do long-time welding more than dozens of hours without stop as it is the invention of forming device based on new C-type of filling material shape while the normal large TIG welding machine can be still used.

In addition, the real destination of 3D printing, which is developing sharply from America to the world, is 3D metal printing, and the scale of 3D metal printing market is expected as more than dozens of times than plastic or polymer 3D printing market. The way of metal 3D printing has been sprinkling powders and welding it with laser so far. However, the price of powder and laser welding devices are too expensive, so it causes rise in costs. Fortunately, when the new TIG welding technology invented by professor Cho's team applies to metal 3D printing, it makes possible about low-cost and mass production, so it is expected as an important technology for large 3D metal printing products. <Pukyong Today>
