Professor Ryu Jang-soo (Department of Economics), Pukyong University’s planning director, has been elected as the 11th chairman of the Minimum Wage Committee, which will decide the minimum wage for 2019, is receiving attention in the field of opinions.

Each press reported simultaneously on May 18.

In a fourth page article on that day, Dong-A Ilbo said, "Professor Ryu is from Pukyong National University, such as Chief Economic Officer Hong Jang-pyo, who oversees the income-led growth policy of the Moon Jae-in government. He is close to the current government, including last year as chairman of the Ministry of Education’s full-time conversion review chairman. "

"The rest of seven members representing public interests (except for official members) are likely to have a tendency to progress or to be in line with the current government, and the minimum wage for the next year will be greatly increased," the newspaper added.

The Korea Times reported on the page 8 that "the new chairman, Ryu Jang-soo, is a specialist in regional and youth employment classified as a moderate conservative. He also actively participated in the policy making process in the previous government. It is an evaluation that he will be able to meet the current government ’s labor policies as he served as the chairman of the Ministry of Education ’s full - time conversion committee and a member of the Central Labor and Welfare Commission at the present government.

Prior to this, the Minimum Wage Committee held a full session in Seoul’s Jung-gu Press Center on May 17, and elected the chairman of the public interest committee, Ryu Jang-soo, and Kim Seong-ho, the standing committee member as a vice-president

The minimum wage committee consists of 27 employees, 9 of which are employee commissioners, user committee members and public interest committee members. The chairman is nominated by a majority of the total committee members by a recommendation among the members of the public interest committee.

The committee, which held the ceremony for the commissioners of the 26 new commissioners and held the meeting of the 11th minimum wage committee, received the request for review of the minimum wage in 2019 submitted by the minister of employment and labor Kim Young-ju on March 30. In order to deliberate and vote on this, we discussed the establishment of a professional and steering committee and the future deliberation schedule.

The minimum wage committee will organize a special committee to conduct site visits and cost of living surveys. From June 14, they will hold six times intensive discussions and plan to determine the minimum wage for 2019.

The statutory time limit for setting the minimum wage for 2019 is until June 28.

On the other hand, the minimum wage committee, which is located on the 4th floor of the Sejong City Government Office, 11th Division of Ministry of Employment and Labor, is an affiliate of the Ministry of Employment and Labor established under Article 12 of the Minimum Wage Act. It is the organization that deliberates on the minimum wage and other important matters concerning the minimum wage.

The minimum wage committee shall decide on the minimum wage level each year. Deliberation and review of the minimum wage, deliberation on the classification of the minimum wage application projects, research and proposals for the development of the minimum wage system, and other matters concerning the minimum wage, which are discussed by the Minister of Employment and Labor Function.
