Are there any materials that are as light and cheap as aluminum, yet have good heat rejection properties like copper?

Professor Kwon Han-sang (Dept. of Materials System Engineering) and Next Generation Materials Co.,Ltd has developed and commercialized next generation composite material 'Al-copper', which is a combination of aluminum and copper.

This new material, which means 'aluminum copper', is made by mixing 1: 1 aluminum and copper, and its weight and price are half that of copper, but its heat dissipation is twice that of aluminum.

Professor Kwon has developed this material by using a discharge plasma to bond aluminum and copper surfaces and extruding it by mixing nano powder of each material.

Aluminum alloy is characterized by having both aluminum and copper properties as long as it is made of aluminum and has a improved property of aluminum by adding copper.

Daeyeong Metal Co., Ltd. (Representative Chang Min-woo, Kyungbuk, Kyungsan), which specializes in aluminum tubes and profiles, has developed a technology transfer agreement with Professor Kwon on May 28 to develop air-conditioner and vehicle piping. "We have decided to transfer the manufacturing method of aluminum-copper composite material for metal PCB and heat exchanger" to 200 million won.

Meanwhile, In April, a company specialized in automobile parts contracted with Professor Kwon to transfer technology of 500 million won to utilize the technology.

Kwon said, "Al-copper can be customized according to the application by changing the ratio of aluminum to copper. Therefore, the applicability of this material is expected to be unlimited throughout the industry." <Pukyong Today>
