A team of graduate students (Park Sung-heum, academic adviser), consisting of Yang Hyeon-seok (Ph.D., 2nd year) and Kim Dahn-bi Kim (Ph.D., 2nd year) from the Department of Physics at Pukyong National University, and Jeong Woo-hyeon (combined master’s and Ph.D. program, 3rd year) at Hanyang University, has been finally selected for the project, ’2020 National R&D Real Challenge’.

The ’National R&D Real Challenge’ project, sponsored by the Korea Institute of Human Resources Development in Science & Technology (KIRD), is a program to support graduate students in the science and engineering fields to develop their research capabilities through hands-on experience in national R&D projects.

In this year’s project under the theme of ’Overcoming human limits with science and technology’, 22 graduate engineering teams across the nation, including the Graduate School of Physics at Pukyong National University, have been selected.

The team of graduate students from Pukyong National University was highly regarded for their creativity, conformity, research capabilities, and ripple effects by presenting ’Development of a non-electric powered body adhesive type light therapy devices for maximizing human self-healing abilities’ as a research theme.

As the team of graduate students at Pukyong National University was selected for this project, the research will be conducted with support of 18 million won for the next six months. Yang Hyeon-seok and Kim Danh-bi are in charge of devices application and composite elements, and Jeong Woo-hyeon is in charge of quantum dot synthesis. Jeong Woo-hyeon, a researcher from Hanyang University, participated in this project during a joint study with the Department of Physics at Pukyong National University.

"In carrying out this research project, we plan to study the field of light therapy that enhances the human body’s therapeutic ability by using a specific wavelength of light, and develop a new body-adhesive device in which solar cell devices and LEDs are mixed.", said Mr.Yang.

He added, "Currently, phototherapy is used to treat wounds and diseases, skin beauty, and improve immunity, but the research results on the mechanism of the cell unit on how the effect occurs are still insufficient. Through this research project, we will try to increase the effectiveness of phototherapy and to reveal the principles and scientific basis for preventing side effects."

Meanwhile, research projects that receives excellent evaluation at the conference on the achievement of R&D Real Challenge held at the end of the year will be promoted as actual national R&D tasks. <Pukyong Today>
