"Since I have lived on sea all my life, I ought to pay what I owe the school that taught me the sea."

Park Hee-seop (age 73), former CEO and founder of Seong-gyeong Fisheries Co., Ltd., a deep-sea fisheries company, generously contributed 500 million won to the university to use it as a scholarship for students at Pukyong National University. Mr. Park was a graduate of Class of 68' in the Department of Fisheries at the National Fisheries University of Busan, the ancestor of Pukyong National University in the past.

On January 14th, Mr. Park had a delivery ceremony of scholarships to the Scholarship Foundation of Pukyong National University Alumni Association (Chief Director Seo Young-ok) with President Jang Young-soo and Chairman Yoon Myung-kil of the Korea Overseas Fisheries Association in the office of the President of Pukyong National University.

Mr. Park said, "I am very happy to visit my Alma mater that made me today. My Alma mater, Pukyong National University, is my whole life," he added, "I was thinking of repaying that I owed my alma mater someday, now I am comfortable with the fact that I can repay that I owed the school even a little."

He said, "I want to encourage students in school who are trying hard to study and challenge in fields that others do not do with scholarships."

The donation of this scholarship to Mr. Park is also commemorating his retirement from management. After graduating from University, he took the sea as a deckhand and lived on board for more than 8 years until he became a captain, and he retired from the front line of management for 35 years after starting up with one fishing boat.

Last month, I transferred the company to a younger manager who can manage better than me while coping with the rapidly changing overseas fishing environment. Mr. Park Sam-am succeeding his role as CEO, a graduate of Pukyong National University (Class of 88', Dept. of Fisheries Management).

After graduating from Daejeon High School in Daejeon Metropolitan City, Mr. Park came to Busan for the first time following his classmates and entered the National Fisheries University of Busan, and always has lived a life with sea so far.

In 2002, he was awarded the Silver Export Tower of the Order of Industrial Service Merit on Oceans Day for his contributions to the development of the deep-sea industry, such as securing new overseas fishing grounds, developing fishing methods, and exporting marine products.

When he was asked for a message of encouragement for young people living in the COVID-19 pandemic era, he said that the sentence 'Heaven helps those who help themselves' is his motto.

He said, "I have tried to do my best by immersing myself in any given task." <Pukyong Today>
