Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced on April 13 that former assembly member Yoo Heung-soo (age 84) had donated 300 million won to the university.

    

On the morning of the 13th, Mr. Yoo visited the university president's office on the 3rd floor of the Administration building at Pukyong National University and delivered 300 million won for school scholarship funds to President Jang Young-Soo, asking him to use the money on training excellent talent.

    

He said on the day, "as I recently disbanded the Namchon Scholarship Association, which I had run as the chairman of the board, I donated all the assets of the scholarship fund to Pukyong University, a national university in Busan."

    

Mr. Yoo had been providing scholarships to local college students such as students attending Pukyong National University since the establishment of the Namchon Scholarship Association in Busan in 1996 to cultivate local talented, he has recently completed the disbandment process for the Scholarship Association and has been seeking was to promote measures to produce local talented.

    

He said, "while thinking about how to carry on the scholarship association's main purpose, the purpose of producing local talented, I asked Pukyong National University to take on that role at the recommendation of the former president of Pukyong National University, Kang Nam-ju, my long-time friend."

    

Yoo, who also served as the Korean ambassador to Japan, was a member of the National Assembly in the regional district of Nam-gu, Busan, where Pukyong National University is located, and received an honorary doctorate from Pukyong National University for his achievements as South Korean Unification Minister.

    

He has shown interest in supporting regional development of Busan, including chairing the Namchon Scholarship Association and steadily donating money for the underprivileged in the region.

    

Mr. Yoo said, "I have been doing many donation activities in Korea and abroad and have realized the value of human resources. I will continue to help young people, who will lead our future, so that they can have a lot of experiences and develop their abilities."

    

Pukyong National University plans to increase efforts to produce talent by providing scholarships named after the Namchon Scholarship Association to outstanding students in accordance with the donation by former assemblyman, Mr. Yoo. <Pukyong Today>
