"Pukyong National University's marine training ship 'Baek-Kyung (3997 t)', which launched into service on April 23 this year, was enough to remind us of the white whale in Herman Melville's novel <Moby Dick>."

A special article about Pukyong National University's marine training ship 'Baek-Kyung' was largely featured as a headline in the Culture/Education section, page 18 of the Busan Ilbo dated on May 11th.

In this article, which was published with a full-color photograph of the Baek-Kyung, entitled 'Lively educate with a 'simulator' that is identical to the actual navigation device', the reporters from the Busan Ilbo got on board Baek-Kyung, and covered the article with the high-tech educational facilities, training equipment, and training contents of the Baek-Kyung, and emphasized the importance of marine training in Korea along with the majestic appearance of the training ship.

The reporter of the Busan Ilbo first introduced the 'simulator room', which is located next to the bridge of the Baek-Kyung, "In the simulator room, the steering gear and engine controller, which are the same as the actual vessel's navigation system, were installed. Students can control the device and practice sailing while looking at the monitor at the same time."

"Like a newly built ship, the classrooms and student bedrooms of Baek-Kyung were also roomy and comfortable. The two classrooms are also used as restaurants, and 120 students can receive education together. Students can also exercise at the Baek-Kyung's fitness club during the practice period," the article continued.

The Baek-Kyung, which is the largest training ship in the domestic fisheries industry, will play an active part as a training cradle for marine technicians following the training ship 'Gaya (1737 t)', which was retired last year.

The article explained, "The Baek-Kyung is an educational institution designated to train marine technicians by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and it is in charge of training on boarding of students who want to become sailors and engineer of ships after graduation," and added, "Especially, fishing practice is also carried out for students who wish to become a fishing boat sailor after graduation and board a deep-sea fishing boat."

The article went on to emphasize, "There are no differing opinions in that this high-quality maritime training has paved the way for Korea to become the world's 10th largest maritime powers." <Pukyong Today>
