For international students from Myanmar who are currently suffering from an emergency in their home country, faculty members and students of Pukyong National University in Busan (President Jang Young-Soo) delivered a donation of 15 million won, which they united to collect.
On the morning of May 17th, Pukyong National University held a special scholarship (fund-raising) presentation ceremony for international students from Myanmar in the president's office on the 5th floor of the administration building and donated the funds to the Burmese international students of Pukyong National University.
In the aftermath of the deteriorating local situation in Myanmar, on-campus Burmese students suffer from difficulties in studying and life due to restrictions on bank transfers. Faculty members and students of Pukyong National University started voluntarily raising funds last month, and today they delivered the donations collected over two weeks.
The donations collected by the faculty members and students of Pukyong National University are supported as living scholarships for the international students from Myanmar.
With this donation, 69 Burmese international students who are currently attending undergraduate and graduate programs at Pukyong National University can receive scholarship benefits.
Chairman Cho Young-seok of the Pukyong National University Student Council Association (4th grade in Systems Management and Engineering) said, "We hope this donation would be of some help to our international students from Myanmar to study and live without difficulty at least while in Korea. We will continue to focus our efforts to support our Burmese international students with interest."
A Pukyong National University international student representative from Myanmar said, "I am really impressed by our school in understanding our difficulties and actively supporting us, and I can feel the warmness of Koreans," and added, "I will not forget this help and will try to help our neighbors in need when spring comes to Myanmar."
Pukyong National University, meanwhile, announced a statement last month in support of Myanmar's democratization by the Student Council Association, and Campus Operations organized and provided about 100 million won in full-tuition scholarships and urgent support for living expenses for Burmese international students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. <Pukyong Today>
