The Convergence Technology Center for Marine Bionics of Pukyong National University (Director Jeong Won-Kyo) has been selected as a support project partner for university-focused research institutes in science and engineering fields for 2021 by the Education Ministry and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

The university-focused research institute support project is a large-scale national project that establishes a research hub for universities and induces specialization through infrastructure support for university-affiliated research institutes in science and engineering fields.

Pukyong National University's Convergence Technology Center for Marine Bionics will receive up to 8 billion won by 2030 as being selected for this project and will build a research hub for the convergence of marine bio and biomedical technologies leading the nation's high-tech marine industry.

The center will proceed with research on innovative marine-biomedical convergence-type technology, such as suitability evaluation. More specifically, research on effective substances and key mechanisms derived from marine and aquatic life resources, the design and development of marine convergence biomedical devices (medical materials and equipment), and the optimization of marine fusion biomedical device performance and biomedical research will be perused.

Along with this, the university will also focus on cultivating specialized research personnel for new high value-added marine industries and establishing a sustainable research center platform and global maritime network through R&D specialization in connection with academia, research, industry, and medicine.

In this project, Professor Jeong Won-Kyo (Dept. of Biomedical Engineering), the research director, Professor Kim Young-Mok (Dept. of Food Science and Technology), Professor Kang Hyun-Wook (Dept. of Biomedical Engineering), and Professor Kim Hyun-Woo (Dept. of Marine Biology) will participate as joint researchers.

Professor Jeong said, "We are a research center that has pioneered research on marine biotechnology, such as building a library of useful materials from marine organisms. Along with being selected for this project, we will develop technologies across all areas of bio-health care, including functional medical materials, food, and cosmetics, as well as biomedical device development fused with the ocean. In this way, we will do our best to contribute to the creation of future water and offshore industries and secure national technological competitiveness."

Pukyong National University is concentrating its efforts on securing a research hub and specializing it, such as the Institute of Fisheries Sciences being selected as a support project for university-focused research centers prior to this selection. <Pukyong Today>
