"How about delivering parcels to the dormitory with an AI robot?"

- PKNU Students won the top prize in Capstone Design Competition

The 'PACIFIC Team' (Advisory professor, Lee Won-Chang) of Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo)'s Electrical Engineering Department students, Park Jae-Beom, Kim Hyeong-Woo, and Kwon Hyeok-Joon won the top prize, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award, in the 2021 Capstone Design Competition. The prize money is three million won.

At the recent competition hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and supervised by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology and the Korea Association of Innovation Center for Engineering Education, they submitted their work 'Deli-Bot Using AI Pacific AI' and received excellent evaluations.

Pukyong National University students have been recognized for their outstanding capabilities by developing an AI robot that delivers parcels gathered at the delivery station of the building directly to the room to solve problems caused by neglect, loss, and theft of parcels that can occur in apartment buildings such as dormitories.

In contrast to the existing delivery robots that have been used by humans to deliver goods directly to the robot, the AI robot developed by these students can lift and move parcels placed on the floor by itself. By applying a vacuum suction method to the gripper, which functions as a human arm, it can lift not only paper boxes but also plastic wrapped items.

When the parcel arrives at the delivery station in the building, the webcam installed here recognizes the address information and sends it to the robot, and the waiting robot moves to the delivery station to pick up the parcel and place it in front of the room. In this series of processes, ROS (Robot Operating System) communication is utilized.

Among these students, Park Jae-Beom said, "I expect that the delivery method in the building using the AI robot will reduce accidents such as loss or theft of parcels and help solve social problems related to delivery."

With support from Innovation Center for Engineering Education of Pukyong National University (Director Jeong Won-Kyo), they advanced to the finals through self-qualification and regional preliminaries of this competition, and competed with engineering students from 138 teams from 87 universities across the country to achieve the top prize. <Pukyong Today>
