Kim Se-Chang (1st year, doctoral course) from the Department of 4th Industrial Convergence Bionics Engineering, Graduate School, Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo), won the Verbal Presentation Award at the 17th regular conference of the Korean Society of Marine Biotechnology (KSMB, President Jeon Yu-Jin).

Kim received good reviews for his research on 'Production of fibrous coat based on poly lactic acid, alginate, and fish collagen containing phycocyanin and bone tissue regeneration efficacy using them' at the recent online and offline academic conference.

He conducted this research with the support of the National Research Foundation of Korea's (NRF) science and engineering support project of the Key Research Institutes for universities (Research directed by Prof. Jeong Won-Kyo), he produced a fibrous membrane for bone tissue regeneration using phycocyanin and fish collagen, which are physiologically active substances derived from marine to promote bone tissue regeneration after a bone tissue defect, and he has suggested the bone regeneration efficacy of this fibrous coat through this research.

He developed a medical device for bone tissue regeneration by putting phycocyanin into poly lactic acid, alginate, and collagen-based fibrous coat which was extracted from fish as a drug that suppresses inflammatory response in bone tissue and promotes bone tissue differentiation.

Using this, he proved the efficacy in an animal model with progenitor osteocytes and bone defects, and the results showed that the fibrous coat containing phycocyanin promotes the differentiation of progenitor osteoblasts and promotes bone regeneration in animal experimental models.

Founded in 2005, the Korean Society for Marine Biotechnology is carrying out activities to promote research on the development and application of science in all fields related to marine biotechnology and to contribute to the development of academic culture. <Pukyong Today>
