Im Jong-Deok (1st-year graduate student) from Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering won the grand prize at the East Asia/Oceania Regional Competition, '16th STEEL CHALLENGE' with the prize money being 2 million won.
Mr. Im has been honored by receiving the top prize with the best results in the East Asia/Oceania region of this competition, which was held in 5 regions including the Americas, West Asia, North Asia, East Asia/Oceania, and Europe/Africa among 800 (graduate) students from 90 universities around the world.
The Steel Challenge is a worldwide competition held since 2005 by Steel University, an educational institution affiliated with the World Steel Association. In Korea, it has been supervised and operated by the Korea Steel Association since 2007.
The competition will be held using the 'Refining Processes' and 'Electric Furnace' processes in the online process simulation module installed on the Steel University website. This is a method of determining the rank through competition by comparing the success of the steel simulation operations at a given time and the method of producing steel with the minimum manufacturing value.
Mr. Im not only succeeded in simulating steel by systematically and strategically designing the input amount and input sequence of ferroalloy and iron scrap while accounting for the time and sequence of carbon and oxygen injections, but he also produced steel with the least manufacturing value among the participants in the process simulation.
As the winner from the East Asia/Oceania region, Mr. Im will participate in the Steel Challenge World Championship to be held in London, England in April and compete with other regional winners. <Pukyong Today>
