A team of undergraduate students from Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo)'s Department of Information and Communication Engineering has been recognized by renowned academic societies for their autonomous driving research achievements and received excellent thesis awards from two academic conferences, which were held by the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers (IEIE) and the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS).
Lee In-Hwan, Kim Joon-Soo, and Kim Hyeon-Yeol in fourth-year and the 3rd-year student team of Lee Do-Yoon, Kim Ye-Rin (Advisory Prof. Lee Hoon) from the Department of Information and Communication Engineering at Pukyong National University recently won the Excellence Award for their thesis (Implementation of road tracking autonomous driving technology through Multi-task learning) at the thesis competition for undergraduates held by the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers (IEIE).
The paper proposed a multi-task learning technology for learning the road tracking, collision avoidance, and obstacle detecting functions used for autonomous driving and received excellent evaluation from the academic society.
The Pukyong National University team confirmed that the road tracking and dispatch prevention functions worked well as a result of building an autonomous driving system that implemented a multi-tasking neural network trained on the embedded board based on the deep learning model 'ResNet18'.
Along with this, Lee In-Hwan, Kim Joon-Soo, and Kim Hyeon-Yeol of the same team won the Best Paper Award in the recent academic presentation of the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS) for their thesis 'Implementation of platooning system based on deep learning' containing research on the platooning.
In this thesis, the student team from Pukyong National University gained recognition with their research thesis by proposing a convolutional neural network (CNN) based technology that enables an autonomous vehicle to recognize the shape of a road and drive itself, and to recognize the distance from an autonomous vehicle ahead of itself and perform a motion control function.
They received good evaluations by implementing the function of estimating the pixel position of the point where the autonomous vehicle should drive in the real-time video captured by the autonomous vehicle and the function of controlling the speed of the vehicle following by recognizing the size of the vehicle ahead through simulation. <Pukyong Today>
