- Carbon-neutrality of Busan, a maritime city … page 23 dated February 14

President Jang Young-Soo of Pukyong National University presented a winning strategy in the world-wide carbon-neutral competition for Busan.

He published a column titled 'Carbon Neutrality in Busan, the Maritime City' in the section 'Ocean View' on page 23 dated February 14 of the Busan Daily.

President Jang Young-Soo said, "As part of efforts to prevent climate change, carbon neutral initiative (Net Zero) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is emerging as a hot topic of the times", he added, "Since our government pledged the ‘Vision of Carbon Neutrality in 2050', all local governments have also joined net zero carbon emissions."

"We know that the era of a global paradigm in which carbon neutrality becomes the national competitiveness is now coming.", he explained based on the fact that 'Net' of 'Net Zero' includes not only reducing carbon emissions but also absorbing and reducing the emitted carbon again.

For this, President Jang Young-Soo analyzed, "Busan government should pay more attention to ‘Blue Carbon’ among the concepts of carbon neutrality," he continued, "I think that there are limitations in Busan’s 'Greenhouse Gas Emission NDC by 2030' that the active carbon absorption policy through blue carbon is not well reflected."

Blue carbon is the term for carbon captured by the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems, and it contains the concept of 'active carbon absorption'.

Along with this, he also suggested a strategy that "It will also be an important competitive point for Busan to diligently discover carbon-neutral start-ups and build a start-up ecosystem to realize carbon neutrality."

President Jang Young-Soo made opinion that, "If Busan, the marine city, is to be a winner in the global carbon-neutrality competition, efforts to reduce carbon emissions and a regional strategy centered on blue canon based on active carbon absorption should be under active consideration." <Pukyong Today>
