PKNU newly establishes department and graduate school for semiconductors

- annual goal of producing 50 undergraduates and 200 graduates… PKNU challenges to take the lead in the new high-tech industries

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) is accelerating the establishment of the semiconductor department and graduate school, and preemptively promotes the cultivation of semiconductor experts in the southeastern region including Busan.

Pukyong National University officially announced on August 3 that it would actively promote the establishment of a semiconductor department and a next-generation semiconductor specialized graduate school that produce 250 semiconductor experts annually, including 50 undergraduates and 200 graduates.

To actively respond to the shortage of manpower in the high-tech industry, Pukyong National University recently completed collecting internal opinions on the plan to establish a new high-tech department, and decided to establish an educational foundation for nurturing specialized semiconductor talents tailored to the field.

Pukyong National University, a specialized comprehensive university, is promoting the establishment of new departments based on the human and material infrastructure pursued by the 'project for semiconductor major track' and 'Human resources training research group for smart green fusion & convergence materials' operated as a government financial support project for the semiconductor field, and it has decided to promote convergence majors and micro-degree courses, as well as existing general semiconductor-related departments such Natotechnology engineering, Materials engineering, Materials system engineering, and Display semiconductor engineering.

When the semiconductor department and graduate school are established in the coming 2024 school year, Pukyong National University will produce field-tailored, cutting-edge semiconductor talents equipped with knowledge in advanced semiconductor fields such as power semiconductors and intelligent semiconductors, as well as practical skills through cooperation with semiconductor companies.

Pukyong National University has also decided to set up a space dedicated to practicing semiconductors. Using semiconductor equipment worth 6 billion won to receive support from companies in the semiconductor field, the Yongdang Campus, a campus specializing in industry-academic cooperation, will be built as a standalone building and laboratory. In addition, Pukyong National University has decided to build an infrastructure where semiconductor experts in nearby universities and companies can jointly provide practical training.

Pukyong National University has recently signed agreements with major universities in Korea including Kyungpook national university, Korea university, Kumoh university of technology, Seoul national university of science and technology, Yonsei university, Hanyang university, and KAIST, which have strengths in the semiconductor field to maximize the effects of education and research.

Pukyong National University, along with semiconductors, is expanding the training of talents in promising high-tech industries in the future.

Pukyong National University's plan is to create a synergistic effect on industrial development by establishing a convergence major and major track to nurture professional manpower in the marine mobility field linked to the characteristics of the region, as well as in the field of secondary batteries and energy materials, establishing a department in the digital finance field, and finally nurturing talents in the high-tech industry.

President Jang Young-Soo said, "As a national university, I expect that Pukyong National University will not only nurture future talents, but also contribute to the growth and development of local industries through convergence industry-university cooperation that responds to the policy direction of nurturing talents in high-tech new industries and applies research results to industrial sites." <Pukyong Today>
