PKNU published 4 volumes of research series that summarize the research results on the Pacific Rim

Research on Pacific Rim cities』 American Tianxia』 and more

The Institute for global and area studies (director Park Sang-Hyun) at Pukyong National University has published a series of research that summarizes results related to the Pacific Rim region.

The Pukyong National University Institute for global and area studies published research series Research on Pacific Rim: Exploration of Trans-pacific and connectivity』 (author Noh Yong-Seok, Idam books) and American Tianxia』 (author Salvatore Babones, Idam books) on July 31 and August 1, respectively.

The Studies on cities in the Pacific Rim: Exploration of Trans-pacific and connectivity』 is a research paper that investigates and reveal the characteristics and formation process of Guangzhou, Yokohama, Singapore, Hawaii, California, Los Angeles, and Veracruz, which are major gateway cities in the Pacific Rim.

This book presents the basis for discussion on the culture of a maritime city as reciprocity and hospitality for a sustainable future of the Pacific Rim by providing a clue to understanding the formation of gateway cities centered on the Pacific Ocean, a transnational region that encompasses the movement of ideology, people, and things.

A Korean version of American Tianxia』 makes a provocative claim that world today, where the competition for supremacy between the United States and China is in full swing, is finally completed with a US-centered order after a long chaotic 100 years in the 20th century.

Claims that the new US-centered order, so-called 'American Tianxia', in which people all over the world willingly accept American-style 'hierarchical transcendentalism' and want to climb the ladder, rather than a world dominated by the US. Based on this, this book reviews the current interconnection between the United States and China on the global order and predicts it from a long-term historical perspective.

Prior to these publications, the Pukyong National University Institute for global and area studies has published a total of four research books this year, including Empire at war』 (author Kim Jin-Ki, Idam books) which looked into modern age in Japan through the prism of war, and Local, where the sea meets art』 (author Jo A-Rak and Ye Dong-Geun, Idam books) which studied the cultural and artistic urban regeneration of Busan, a maritime city, concentrating research results related to the Pacific Rim area.

The Institute for global and area studies at Pukyong National University has been selected for the support program for humanities and social research institutes hosted by the National research foundation of Korea and is carrying out research on the ‘peaceful co-evolution of multiple civilizations formed in the Pacific Rim as a mega-region: regional incorporation, national conflict, and urban hospitality'. <Pukyong Today>
