PKNU newly established scholarship fund up to 48 million won, the highest-ever

- established ‘Dongwon frontier scholarship’… to support the growth of talented people who are working hard to pioneer the future

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that it will establish a new ‘Dongwon frontier scholarship’ that supports up to 48 million won per student (12 million won per year for 1 person) together with the Dongwon academic research foundation (hereinafter referred to as the ‘foundation').

Scholarships are provided by selecting talented people who will lead the Korean and global society, and are supported as scholarships that can be used for self-development, rather than scholarships focused on tuition support as in the past.

A scholarship of 12 million won per year is a great amount considering the level of tuition at Pukyong National University. Considering that tuition this year ranges from 1.7 million won (humanities and social sciences) to 2.17 million won (engineering) per semester.

Pukyong National University and the foundation decided to select 6 scholarship students every year, and plan to hold a briefing session at 5:00 pm on April 13 (Thu) in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the administration building to provide information on the purposes of the Dongwon frontier scholarship, qualifications for application, and the selection process.

The Dongwon frontier scholarship is supported by a foundation established in 1986 with the support of Kim Jae-Cheol, honorary chairman of Dongwon group, an alumnus of Pukyong National University. Kim Jae-Cheol is a person who pioneered Korea's deep-sea fishing industry, laid the foundation for national economic development, and built a leading global company. He is taking the lead in nurturing future talent with the belief that ‘a country can become wealthy and strong when talented people are well-nurtured’.

Jang Young-Soo, president of Pukyong National University said, “We plan to select scholarship holders based on your self-development efforts, plans for future development, and potential to contribute to Korea and global society, not in order of your grades,” he added, “With the Dongwon frontier scholarship as an opportunity, I expect that our students will receive great help in growing into first movers in Korea and the global society.”

Pukyong National University plans to go through a preparation period until the first semester to encourage students to apply and select scholarship students fairly, and after announcing the selection of scholarship students in August, select scholarship students in September and apply for scholarships from the second semester. <Pukyong Today>
