An undergraduate student studying physics at Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo), Lee Dong-Ik (4th year student), published a thesis in the SCI-level international journal <Progress in organic coatings> (IF: 6.6).

Lee Dong-Ik recently published his thesis, 'Nanoscale paraffin layer fabricated using spin coating technique for on-demand removable passivation' (advisory prof. Lee Seunghun) in this journal as the first author.

In this paper, Lee presented the research result that paraffin coating can be used as a protective layer that protects (passivation) materials or devices and can be easily removed (depassivation) as needed.

Professor Lee Seung-Hoon added an explanation, "Paraffin, the main material of candles, is chemically very stable and can be used as a sample protection layer. Taking advantage of these properties, it was discovered that paraffin can be utilized as a protective layer that can be easily removed as needed."

In this research, Lee Dong-Ik conducted a systematic experiment to optimize the conditions for creating a paraffin layer that stably protects the sample and is easy to remove. He showed that the paraffin layer was easily removed by vacuum treatment, and further experimental measurements showed that the sample was well protected only by removing the protective layer.

Professor Lee said, "We expect that this research will accelerate research on quantum materials and new materials in the future and activate various forms of joint research."

Lee Dong-Ik said, "As an undergraduate, I was able to learn a lot from this research with the guidance and help of professors and seniors. I will do my best to contribute to the laboratory and academia by devoting myself to research." <Pukyong Today>
