Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that Kim Min-Jae, a student studying for the integrated master's and doctoral course in environmental engineering at the graduate school, and Lee Joo-Yoon, a master's student, won the academic paper award at the Korean society of environmental engineers2023 conference.

At this academic conference recently held at BEXCO in Busan, student Kim Min-Jae received the academic paper award for 'improvement of methanogenic degradation of acetate by magnetite supplementation: batch and semi-continuous tests' (advisor Lee Joon-Yeop) presented at the society's academic conference last year.

He received excellent evaluations for highlighting the seriousness of the problem of organic acid accumulation, which can commonly occur in anaerobic digesters, and presenting a solution to this problem in this paper.

Lee Joo-Yoon won the academic paper award for his poster paper 'development of a primer set for quantification of methane-producing bacteria in anaerobic digesters of sewage sludge' (advisor Lee Joon-Yeop) presented at the academic conference of this society last year.

This paper designed a set of primers and probes for real-time qPCR (real-time quantitative gene amplification analysis) to enable quantification of methane bacteria and laid the foundation for evaluating the efficiency of digesters and developing methods to respond to destabilization.

The Korean society of environmental engineers is an academic organization established in 1978 for the purpose of developing environmental engineering studies, improving the status of environmental engineering engineers, and developing and guiding environmental engineering technology, the organization evaluated 905 research papers presented at last year's academic conference with over 1,900 attendees, selected the best papers, and awarded them at this year's academic conference. <Pukyong Today>
