The memorial book 『a life that became a part of the sky at the above 8,000 meters』 (Forever Alpinist Seo Sung-Ho), a memorial book for the late Seo Sung-Ho, also one of our alumni, who is considered as a representative mountaineer of Busan, was published last month.
It has been 10 years since Mr. Seo Sung-Ho, who climbed twelve 8,000m peaks, died on the way down after climbing the world's highest peak, Everest, without using supplemental oxygen in 2013.
Mr. Seo entered Pukyong National University in 1998 (class of '98, electrical and control engineering), joined the mountaineering club, won the president's mountain climbing competition and the National sports festival university team competition in 2003, and climbed Denali (6,194 meters), the highest peak in North America, in 2004, and succeeded in climbing Pumori, Himalayas in 2005.
He participated as a member of the 'dynamic Busan, expedition of hope' (commander Hong Bo-Sung), formed with the goal of summiting fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, he had climbed many of the world's highest peaks since 2006, including Everest, twelve 8,000-meter peaks, and Pumori (7,161 meters).
Everest, which he climbed in 2006 using supplemental oxygen, he attempted again without oxygen in 2013. He expressed his hope for success in the project 'From 0 to 8,848', which started from the Bay of Bengal in India at an altitude of 0m above sea level by kayak and climbed to the summit of 8,848 meters by bicycle, walking, and climbing using only human power, however, he died of exhaustion at the last camp at 7,950 meters during the descent.
The late commander Kim Chang-Ho also participated in this Busan expedition, and the two showed a perfect partnership by climbing to the top of most of the eleven 8,000-meter peaks without failure. Mr. Kim, summited Mount Everest without oxygen in 2013 along with Mr. Seo but died in an avalanche during Gurja Himal trek (7,193 m) in Nepal five years later in 2018.
Forever Alpinist Seo Sung-Ho (incorporated association, chief director Hong Bo-Sung) published 『a life that became a part of the sky at the above 8,000 meters』 which traces and describes his climbing journey step by step. The book describes in detail from the beginning when he entered university and joined the mountaineering club searching for romance, a painful memory of witnessing the death of two colleagues while climbing and descending Pumori, the highest peak in Nepal, and the countless hardships he had to overcome at each 8,000-meter peaks, and to his determination not to lose his dream of mountaineering despite his father's death and financial difficulties.
After His death, Forever Alpinist Seo Sung-Ho (incorporated association) was formed and successfully carried out several projects to honor the deceased's achievements and unfulfilled goals, including support projects for excellent mountaineers, development projects for youth and college mountaineers, and support projects for overseas expeditions. The memorial association decided to disband after its 10 years with the publication of this memorial book. <Pukyong Today>
