Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-soo) started undertaking a large-scale innovation in the academic organization to foster interdisciplinary talents who will lead the era of the 4th industrial revolution and new industries.

Pukyong National University has announced that the university recently confirmed a new university development plan and reforming plan for the academic organization to substantialize the ideal of talent and submitted an enrollment quota plan to the Ministry of Education.

The academic reorganization at Pukyong National University is to pre-emptively reflect the rapidly changing educational environment and to lay the foundation for a shared growth educational ecosystem.

Above all, an undergraduate college (tentatively named) dedicated to basic liberal arts education and first-year education will be newly established in order to foster interdisciplinary creative talents based on convergence, integrated education, and studies.

Freshmen of Pukyong National University will develop their core competencies through a variety of intellectual training based on convergence and consilience of liberal arts basic education, basic subject in majoring, career counseling and planning, and extracurricular programs during their first year, and students will settle down to their major from the second year.

In order to lower the barriers between the domain of knowledge and to converge, the new academic system will take effect in earnest at colleges. From 2 majors up to 5 majors are combined into one faculty, a total of 12 new faculties will be created. Students in the same faculty can broaden their domain of knowledge by taking common subjects even if they have different majors.

New colleges will also appear to cultivate specialized talents such as future industry demand. In addition to the departments related to the new industry of the existing engineering colleges, the Information Convergence College with 14 majors from 6 faculties will be newly established to cultivate new industry professionals such as Human Bio Convergence Major, Human ICT Convergence Major, and Big Data Convergence Major.

At the same time, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will have a major in social welfare in response to aging, and the College of Natural Sciences will have a Science System Simulation Department for high-tech industrial design to respond to new industries in each field. This academic reorganization plan is expected to be applied from the 2022 school year after deliberation by the Ministry of Education.

Jang Young-soo, President of Pukyong National University, said, "With this academic reorganization, I hope that Pukyong National University will lead academic development in connection with key industries in Busan, such as water and ocean, as a regional-oriented national university. In addition, I will consider it as a starting point for the innovative creation of universities by responding to national policies such as developing new industries in connection with the 4th industrial revolution, promoting basic protection studies, and supporting customized majors for students." <Pukyong Today>
