Pukyong National University in Busan (President Jang Young-Soo) held a launching ceremony of the 'Baek-kyung,' the largest training ship in the fisheries industry at the filled pier of Yongho Bay on the afternoon of April 23rd and began operating in earnest.

The event was opened in observance of the rules and attended by Pukyong National University President Jang Young-Soo, Vice Minister Jeong Jong-cheol of the Ministry of Education, National Assembly member Park Jae-ho (Namgu-eul, Busan), Park Soo-young (Namgu-eul, Busan), Kim Jun-seok from the Fisheries Policy Office at Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Park Jae-beom, head of Namgu Busan Office, and Nam Ki-chan, president of Busan Port Authority.

On this day, several celebratory events were held, starting with the report of the construction progress of the Baek-kyung, followed by the commendation to the people of merit, the delivery ceremony of the sailing order, and a boat tour and parade.

With a total of 3997 tons, the Baek-kyung of Pukyong National University is the largest among the fisheries training ships and is considered a 'campus on the sea.' With the government budget of 53.2 billion won, Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. began construction in 2019, followed by a launching ceremony and a reception ceremony, and the service launching ceremony was held on this day.

The Baek-kyung is the newest type of eco-training ship capable of operating a cruising distance of 18,636 miles with a maximum speed of 16 knots, a length of 97.0m, a ship width of 15.4m, and 160 people on board.

The ship is equipped with a clouding computer system and a LAN facility to enable real-time monitoring of onboard networking, navigational, and institutional information and has a simulation training system utilizing this technology. To prevent air pollution, it is equipped with a TIER III exhaust reduction device, the highest class among training ships, and an automatic ship positioning control system (DPS), allowing trainees to practice in one place for a long time.

The name of the Baek-kyung is inherited from the former training ship of Pukyong National University that pioneered Korean deep-sea fishing in the 1960s.

The University President Jang Young-Soo said, "I expect that the Baek-kyung will cultivate future talents who will lead the era of the 4th industrial revolution while sailing to every corner of the world's oceans and will play a pivotal role in the growth and future prosperity of Korea, which dreams of becoming a marine power in the 21st century.

Vice Minister Jeong Jong-cheol said in a congratulatory address, "I hope that the Baek-kyung of Pukyong National University will be the birthplace for nurturing professional talents in the marine and fisheries industries." <Pukyong Today>
