PKNU builds Core Research Support Center for environmental pollution
- Selected for the Ministry of Education's Empowerment Project of Basic Science Research Capabilities ... cost estimated at 2.2 billion won
Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) decided to establish a core research support center that analyzes and studies isotopes of environmental pollutants such as soil, groundwater, seawater, and fine dust.
The research team led by Professor Ryu Jong-Sik (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) of Pukyong National University announced on the 9th that the team has been selected for the ‘Empowerment Project of Basic Science Research Capabilities of the Science and Engineering Research Support Project 2021’ announced by the Ministry of Education on the 4th.
This project of the Ministry of Education is to support the operation of universities by creating specialized 'Core Research Support Centers’ for each research field to improve university R&D capabilities and create an efficient research ecosystem.
Pukyong National University has been selected for this project and will receive support of 2.2 billion won by 2027 to build, operate, and utilize the ‘Convergence Core Support Center for Earth and Environment.’
The center aims to establish a system that comprehensively analyzes environmental samples such as soil, groundwater, seawater, and fine dust to solve problems related to global environmental pollution, which are constantly increasing, and nurture experts who can interpret this data scientifically.
Accordingly, the university plans to revitalize industry-university joint research by establishing facilities that cooperatively utilize specialized research equipment to analyze organic and inorganic components and isotopes of various environmental samples. It will also develop new analysis technologies such as supreme precision quantitative analysis technology for trace components and precision isotope analysis technology. The university will also develop new analysis technologies such as super precision quantitative analysis technology for trace components and ultra-precision isotope analysis technology.
For this, 4 departments in the earth & environment sector at Pukyong National University, including the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Department of Oceanography, Department of Environmental Atmospheric Sciences, and Department of Environmental Engineering, will jointly participate in this center. Together, they will integrate research equipment, activate joint research through research mentoring, and plan to provide a one-stop advanced analysis service system.
Principal Research Professor Ryu Jong-Sik said, "I expect from this project not only to nurture domestic global environmental analysts based on industry-university joint research but also establish a support system for discovering and solving current issues such as environmental disasters and harmful factors in the local community to improve safety and quality of life." <Pukyong Today>
