PKNU formed the first VR system for fine dust expert education
- virtual experience of expensive equipment 'scanning LiDAR system' has become possible
Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that it has built a VR (virtual reality) education system for nurturing experts on fine dust for the first time in Korea.
Pukyong National University specialized graduate school of fine dust management (director Noh Young-Min, prof. in environmental engineering) recently set up a VR trial class on the second floor of Chungmu building and started operating a VR education system equipped with specialized equipment and educational programs.
This system allows students to experience the innards, operational principle, and the way of operation of the 'scanning LiDAR system', a high-tech dust observation device using a laser, in virtual reality.
When trainees wear VR equipment on their head and hands, they can virtually experience the scanning LiDAR system through 3D images and videos.
Although the 'scanning LiDAR system' is a high-performance device that can display the fine dust concentration distribution in a high resolution of 30 m within a 5 km radius, it is an expensive device and is equipped with sensitive optical sensors, so it was difficult to directly check the internal structure and operational principle.
Following the establishment of the VR education system this year as part of the educational innovation program, the project group plans to expand VR-using educational programs and classrooms equipped with VR systems next year.
Director Noh Young-Min said, "Pukyong National University’s project team will strive to develop fine dust experts with a high level of understanding on observation device actually used in the field using the VR system, and to advance fine dust-related research through customized education in response to the day-to-day developing equipment."
Pukyong National University specialized graduate school of fine dust management has been operating a fine dust expert training program since last year, it was selected as the leading university in the southeast of the environmental technology manpower nurturing project co-hosted by the Ministry of environment and the Korea environmental industry and technology institute. <Pukyong Today>
