‘Students create own educational programs that students want to be offered’
- PKNU opens ‘non-subject idea contest’ … to offer classes related to self-management, data, and metaverse
The contest, which offers opportunities for university students to plan an educational program they want to learn in addition to their major classes, is attracting public attention.
This is about the ‘non-subject idea contest’ of Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo), which celebrated its third this year.
This contest is held to contest ideas for extracurricular curriculum programs in areas other than credits, such as learning competencies, careers and psychology, employment, and entrepreneurship, and not subjects such as majors or general education courses where credits are earned.
The contest, which was first opened in 2020, is characterized by opening and operating excellent works among educational plans designed and submitted by students as non-subject programs.
At Pukyong National University, while various departments open and operate about 180 different extracurricular programs, this contest was prepared to reflect students' needs and the latest trends. Pukyong National University's various extracurricular programs are provided free of charge by utilizing the university's human and material resources.
In the first contest held in 2020, ‘Hey, you can be a writer too!’, which publishes manuscripts written by students as books, and ‘non-subject supporters’, which promote non-subject programs, received the 2nd prize and participation prize, respectively, and these are being offered in the campus.
In the second contest of last year, the ‘Pukyong data science contest’ with the purpose of holding a data analysis contest and the ‘PKNU metaverse course’ to learn how to create and utilize a metaverse were opened with receiving the 1st prize and the 3rd prize, respectively.
The ‘Pukyong asset management camp’, which offers students how to manage assets, and the ‘UI/UX design course’, which trains web and mobile design, won the 1st and the 2nd prize, and will be opened as actual programs during the winter vacation and next year.
Kang Jin-Dong, director from the division of student competency development at Pukyong National University, said, “We will actively accept students' opinions in the non-subject curriculum to increase interest and understanding of the non-subject program, and make further efforts to establish a virtuous cycle system in which the opening of a new non-subject curriculum leads to active participation in the non-subject curriculum.” <Pukyong Today>
