PKNU develops a ‘Korean hydrogen supply chain designing platform’

Professor Jay Liu

Pukyong National University is attracting public attention for participating in the development of a Korean hydrogen supply chain designing platform based on artificial intelligence (AI). Pukyong National University announced that the university was selected as a home for a new task, the Basic Research Laboratory in the year 2021, by the Ministry of Science and ICT under the supervision of Professor Jay Liu's (Dept. of Chemical Engineering) research team. Pukyong National University, in collaboration with Kyunghee University, Ewha Womans University, Ulsan Technopark, and the Korea Hydrogen Industry Association (KHIA), will receive 1.1 billion won by 2024 to promote the development of a 'Sustainable AI-based Real-Time Dynamic Korean Hydrogen Supply Chain Designing platform'. The goal of this study is to develop a platform that designs an optimization model for the entire hydrogen supply chain, including production, storage, transportation, and supply management in real-time, which has been attracting attention as a next-generation fuel.

If this platform is developed, we can derive optimal results online (web) in real-time, it will use data from the entire hydrogen supply chain to determine where to produce and at what scale, how to build a hydrogen production base, how to produce it, what method and route it should be transported, and where the hydrogen charging station should be located. Above all, the development of a web-based platform that utilizes a real-time artificial intelligence-based dynamic hydrogen supply chain design and analyzes supply chain business models is the first research attempted in Korea as well as in the world. In this study, the Pukyong National University's research team plans to develop a Korean hydrogen supply network platform with high-level accuracy to the eup, myeon and dong (neighborhood administrative areas) regions using GIS (Geographical Information System) as a research target in South and North Gyeongsang Province. Jay Liu, the chief professor responsible for the research said, "From the point of view of the revitalization of the hydrogen economy and national energy transition, I think that supply chain design, such as securing and operating the infrastructure for the entire hydrogen supply process, is very important," he added, "I expect that this research will be able to develop an efficient hydrogen technology nurturing policy and investment strategy, and ultimately contribute to the establishment of cost-effective energy conversion policies."
