The Institute's goals include the pursuit of growth and innovative changes.

Established Research Center

  • Research Center for Ocean Industrial Development (RCOID)
The Research Center for Ocean Industrial Development (RCOID) was established on January 4, 1991, as part of the vitalization of university studies of KOSEF. It aims to develop basic/applied technology for the improvement of production of Korean coastal fishing grounds and farms, consistent industrial cooperation for the development of ocean space creational technology and the formation of an international cooperative research system. By presidential decree, it has been reorganized as the legal laboratory of a national university.
Step 1 of the Center was completed in 2000 with excellent results, as industrialization through improved productivity of coastal fishing grounds occurred. The development focus of research technology on fishery development was later changed to an independent research management system, expanding to step 2 from its base of step 1, and developing various forms of technology related to the usage development of ocean space. This focused on the expansion of its area of sustainable coastal space using the technology development, coastal oceanography, coastal and harbor engineering, and coastal ecological environment engineering and fishery engineering.
It also concentrates on nuturing intellectuals with knowledge of technology development and who possess masters and doctor's degrees from graduate school. It addition, the center is internationally recognized through its networks with research groups and databanks with domestic and overseas research organizations and research groups. Moreover, apart from its maritime specialization at PKNU, our institute has the further goal of undertaking core work by fostering the development of an ocean perspective technology industry and making Busan an ocean city base.
  • Environmental Research Center
It is a fact that environmental problems are increasing, and this is a very important issue facing modern society. It cannot be denied that the development of science technology brought innovative benefits and improvements to our lives; however, it also brought serious environmental problems to the natural environment, which is the basis of human life.
Currently, cars and public transportations release toxic gases, causing air pollution, wastewater in numerous factories, pollution of coasts and oceans, basically causing huge risks to human life and our vital fish resources. It is therefore essential that we find a way to improve this polluted environment and deeper research is required as researchers exchange their studies and more organized and structured basis. To meet these requirements, we offer basic studies of environmental problems by having built an environmental research center and providing professional knowledge and technology to government, public organizations and private companies to contribute to society.

  • Active Fault & Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Reasearch Institute
Earthquakes of 5 or higher occurred in Gyeongju and Pohang over and over recently. People became increasingly interested in earthquakes and necessary technologies for earthquake hazard mitigationwith a consensus. This institute was established in 2017 to satisfy this requirement.
Developed countries support research center to study natural disasters and hazard mitigation technology well. In particular, countries near Pacific Rim focus their studies on earthquakes. Korea has been considered to be a safty zone for earthquakes, but researches for earthquakes are proceeded after Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes. However, research on the characteristics of domestic earthquakes is on starting step and lack of researchers and experts. It is needed to organize and culitvate experts for domestic earthquakes professionally and this institute(AFEMi) intends to fulfill these roles. The main activities are,
first, analysis of the characteristics of active faults and the mechanism of earthquake occurrence on the Korean Peninsula. Second, detection and analysis of active faults using the latest remote sensing and spatial information technology. Third, in the study of the characteristics of earthquake disasters and the characteristics of secondary disasters according to the characteristics on the ground. Fourth is the study of earthquake predictability through statistical analysis of seismic fault data.
