The development of basic science is the base stone of improvement of national competitiveness and public welfare. Recently, there has been much research into developing new products and new functional material through the application of bioscience technology, However in order to develop applied science, the development of basic science which is its foundation, should be supported in the first instance.

The Research Institute for Basic Sciences was established in 2001 to research each area and process related to the development of basic sciences and the qualitative improvement of basic education and research of natural sciences and bioscience. We also provide the administrative support that allows the flexible undertaking of research activities of the basic science area. Moreover, we would like to contribute to the country goal's of becoming a leading science technology nation by undertaking work related to applied business based on natural sciences with basic science research.

  • Research Institute for Basic Sciences
The Research Institute for Basic Sciences was established on December 5, 1990, and provides scholarly support business for flexible research activity. It oversees and organizes such activities as special invitational lectures, open and support symposiums, support for thesis payment and support for applying for research topics. It comprises a mathematics research team, a physics research team, a chemical research team, a life science research team, an earth science research team and a statistic/informational research team, Health science research team together with a total of 97 professors who oversee the research.
  • Research Institute for Nano Sciences and Technology
The Research Institute for Nano Sciences and Technology was established in February 17, 2004 to discover scientific approaches to the application of the rapidly developing nano technology. The technology related to the size of nano is a necessary area of synthesized studies, and it requires corporational research among various schools rather than certain studies. It comprises 4 research teams: a nano material research team, a nano element research team, a nano analysis research team and a nano bio-technology research team. It strives to achieve national innovative technology and an oriented system as a means of preparing the framework for a national research center and gaining a stable research basis by supporting the opening of national and international symposiums.
  • The Research Institute for Phosphor Bank
The Research Institute for Phosphor Bank is supplies the phosphors for LED and OLED in the field of display and lighting. White LED(WLED) phosphors are used to indicates the white light through downconversion emission and OLED phosphor for display is reproduced the colors for each of the R, G, B fluorescent emission. Phosphor bank is to study the research of phosphor, LED and OLED's packaging, and the applicability of other material.
  • Research Institute for Sports Sciences
The Research Institute for Sports Science contributes to national and local communities through academic research and exchanges in the sports industry and science, and researches to strengthen the university's internal and external capabilities.
  • Research Center for Smart Materials and Devices on Physics
Scientific research paradigm is rapidly changing. Smart materials, such as novel semiconductors, energy materials, and artificially structured thin- films, and functional structures, are playground to find a key solution for solving long-historical-issues in Physics, energy crisis, environmental problems, and the overcoming limitations of modern electronic, magnetic, and optical materials for devices.
Research Center for Smart Materials and Devices on Physics (RCSMDP) is established for dedicated interdisciplinary studies and cooperative researches focusing on smart materials in the perspectives of fundamental and applied Physics.
RCSMDP will be developed to be basic science research hub providing infrastructure through integrations of state-of-the-art instruments, facilities, and solid research backgrounds as well as contributing relevant research sectors in Busan, Ulsan, and Kyeong-Sang province.
